I'm not sure why Anders was so transformed from Dragon Age: Awakenings to Dragon Age II, but I definitely think that the introduction in Awakening is tons more fun. The introduction of Anders sets the tone straight away. He's quirky, irreverent and quite fun, even in the face of darkspawn.
